At the Patient’s Side: Appreciation for the Co-Survivor

Writer, podcaster, and healthcare advocate Kristin Flanary—or Lady Glaucomflecken as she’s known online—returns to the Your Stories podcast to reflect on her journey and advocacy as a co-survivor of her husband’s cancer.

"If we didn’t have research, Jerry probably wouldn't be here." - Judi

One month away from retiring as a firefighter after more than 30 years, Jerry was diagnosed with multiple myeloma, a type of blood cancer. But thanks in part to a clinical trial led by Dr. Rahul Banerjee, a Conquer Cancer-funded researcher, Jerry, was able to get back to his favorite activities after treatment.  Jerry and his wife Judi credit much of his treatment and post-recovery success to the power of cancer research.

Generations of Courage

When 27-year-old Hattie felt a lump in her chest, she had a suspicion about what it could be: Her mother, Molly, and grandmother, Mary Ann, had both been diagnosed with breast cancer earlier in their lives.  The good news: It was treatable. Hattie's oncologist, Dr. Debra Patt, a Conquer Cancer grant recipient, drew from sustained progress in cancer research––advancements made since the time Molly had been in treatment––to inform Hattie’s care plan.

“You sit, and your mind tends to wander—what if, what if?”

Brian received specialized care from his oncologist, Conquer Cancer grant recipient Dr. Chi Viet, and is a survivor today because of years of research that informed his care.

Less Toxic Treatments for the Littlest Patients

Surviving months of grueling treatments for advanced-stage cancer—treatments designed for adults—Leo has been declared cancer-free for more than five years, but with side effects that will last his lifetime. His oncologist, Conquer Cancer grant recipient Dr. Jenny Ruiz, is working to discover safer and better treatment options to improve survivorship.

Help create a world where cancer is prevented or cured, and every survivor is healthy.
