Priscilla Brastianos, MD, Honors the Mother and Grandmother She Lost to Breast Cancer
When Priscilla Brastianos, MD, lost her mother to breast cancer, she made a commitment to do better for people with cancer. In 2012, she was a Young Investigator Award recipient and received a $50,000 grant to study how breast cancer spreads to the brain. Today, she continues searching for new treatment options.

Inspired to Become an Oncologist

When Dr. Brastianos was very young, her mother shared stories about the grandmother she never knew, a medical student in Greece who diagnosed herself with breast cancer. Her grandmother graduated from medical school and practiced medicine until she passed away at 29 from metastatic breast cancer.

The legend of her grandmother inspired Dr. Brastianos to become interested in medicine and in conquering cancer.

When she was in medical school, Dr. Brastianos’s mother was diagnosed with the same breast cancer that took her grandmother. She experienced her mother’s journey from diagnosis through treatment and ultimately to hospice. After her mother passed away, she made a commitment to find better treatment options for people with cancer

I knew that I wanted to change the course of oncology because of the suffering that came with cancer.
