Gateway for Cancer Research℠ is investing $1.5 million dollars to create a more diverse patient population represented in oncology research and expand clinical trial access for patients from underserved and underrepresented communities.

The second biennial Gateway Discovery Grant, administered by Conquer Cancer®, the ASCO Foundation, will provide three to five years of funding to catalyze innovative clinical research with a strong potential impact on mitigating health disparities. Applicants may apply now for the grant, which will be awarded in 2022.

“Gateway is proud to announce the 2022 Gateway Discovery Grant in partnership with Conquer Cancer,” said Michael Burton, president and chief executive officer, Gateway for Cancer Research. “This significant award will help accelerate innovative oncology research focused on the critical issue of cancer health disparities, ensuring all patients have access to potentially lifesaving therapies and treatment.”

The Phase I or Phase II clinical trial funded by a Gateway Discovery Grant may include the study of any cancer type, and to align with the focus of the award applications must propose research that will contribute to the improved diagnosis and/or treatment of cancers found to disproportionately affect underrepresented populations.

To help ensure equitable care for all those facing cancer, the Gateway Discovery Grant will support research that aims to reduce disparities related to factors such as race and ethnicity, age, gender, geography, education, and other socioeconomic indicators that may impact outcomes.

The Gateway Discovery Grant helps fuel ASCO’s commitment to increase access to clinical trials, and it adds to a growing list of grants available through Conquer Cancer created to support oncology researchers from underserved and underrepresented areas and for researchers studying minority patient populations.

“Our mission to conquer cancer worldwide directs us to look at the best ways to serve the people and places where support is needed to elevate the quality of research and care,” said Nancy R. Daly, MS, MPH, chief executive officer, Conquer Cancer. “The Gateway Discovery Grant will play a vital role in our longstanding commitment to improving treatment for every cancer, every patient, everywhere.”

Conquer Cancer and Gateway for Cancer Research were pleased to announce its Scientific Partnership in 2019, an initiative established to identify compelling areas of inquiry in the field of cancer research and to fund the talented clinician-scientists best positioned to pursue these studies.
