Terrell Coring, PharmD, MD, transitioned from the pharmacy field to now pursuing oncology and cancer research. In this Q&A, Dr. Coring shares how a Conquer Cancer award helped accelerate his work in cancer care. The award enables non-oncology physician-residents from populations that have been structurally excluded from medicine to attend the ASCO Annual Meeting, where they network with leading oncologists and learn about career options in the oncology field.

Eric P. Winer, MD, is the Director of Yale Cancer Center and Physician-in-Chief of Smilow Cancer Hospital at Yale New Haven. He has received numerous awards for his breast cancer research, most notably ASCO’s Gianni Bonadonna Breast Cancer Award and Lecture in 2017 and the William L. McGuire Memorial Lecture Award in 2016 at the San Antonio Breast Cancer Symposium.

We chatted with him about why he chose oncology for his career and the power of cancer research.

Can you imagine needing medical care for your child but being unable to simply and safely take them to see a doctor?  That's the case in low-and middle-income countries, where less than 30% of children with cancer survive due to unavailable or unaffordable treatment.
